An Example of Obama NOT Making the US Safer

Comments
A soldier is abhout to be fired for...being gay!! Why do we have to keep hearing about this and nothing gets done about it? It's not like Arabic linguists are easy to just come by (trust me, the language is rather difficult)...

Dan Choi, a West Point graduate and officer in the Army National Guard who is fluent in Arabic and who returned recently from Iraq, received notice today that the military is about to fire him. Why? Because he came out of the closet as a gay man on national television.

This is the stupidest fucking thing I have ever heard for many reasons, but here I will list two. One, being fired because you are gay is simple discrimination and even if you are one of those right-wingers controlling the GOP, you have to admit this is complete BS. Two, firing an Arabic linguist for a poor reason while in the middle of a war is rather ridiculous and short-sighted especially since they are needed.

How can Obama continue to let this crap happen? He is the Commander-in-Chief. He is the head of the military. If Dan Choi was fired from the military for being gay, then Obama is obviously to blame and clearly condones this by allowing it to happen on his watch. He needs to reverse "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and allow anyone who wants to fight and die for this country do so.

btw, sorry I have been MIA. I am in the process of moving, training, and all kinds of other fun associated with this. I hope to get back to blogging soon, but count on me stopping by your blogs in the future even if I do not post. I have at least been reading when I get breaks. I may be MIA until sometime in July :-(

Jon Stewart is right on the money nearly all the time including now (unless you are of the kind of person who thinks Michelle "Wing-Nut" Bachmann is awesome). Like my last, and highly successful post thanks to my many visitors on both sides of the aisle, I really have nothing to add to the issue other than to say I think the reaction Obama and his policies get from the far, far right is priceless. They use words like "tyrant", and "fascism", and "socialist", and "reeducation camps", and various other fear mongering words. I can't imagine living in such fear with my head jammed so far up my ass. I laugh at your stupidity. I mock your fear. You know, thankfully none of the rhetoric from the far-right leaders has incited like-minded and impressionable far-right crazies to shoot up churches or neighborhoods or kill any cops. That would be a true tragedy. Thankfully it hasn't come to that. If you hate America, then just leave, right? John Stewart*:

Tyranny...aka our democratically elected President. I think you might be confusing tyranny with losing.

When the guy you disagree with gets elected, he is probably going to do things you disagree with. He could cut taxes on the wealthy and remove the governments oversight capability, invade a country you thought should not be invaded. That's not tyranny, that's democracy. See, now you're in the minority. It's supposed to taste like a shit taco.

And by the way, if I remember correctly, when disagreement was expressed about that president's action when you all were in power, I believe the response was "Why do you hate America?", "Watch what you say", "love it or leave it", "suck on my trucknuts".

Obama: We are not a Christian Nation [gasp!]

Comments
______________________________
"One of the great strengths of the United States," the President said, "is ... we have a very large Christian population -- we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."

Oh, those poor, poor Christian conservatives. I hardly even care to address Obama's statement other than to say I think the reaction it got from the far-right Christians is priceless. Some dipshits find this as proof Obama is truly a Muslim and not an American citizen. Other nutjobs think "Obama is afraid of the J-word" (apparently it is even a bad word to them now!) and thinks he can get into heaven by being a super Christian and making sure we all know it. Other clowns think he is "he is extremely dangerous, persistent, and is intent on changing the core values of America." Yes, the President has that much power. If you think this is impressive, you should see him walk on water. Oh, what a spectacle. If you want to see more of this Biblical magic, just wait until he turns us all into [insert gasp] homosexuals and, [insert another gasp] socialists with the snap of his fingers! Oh lord no! The humanity. Yes. I mock all of you right-wing conspiracy theorists (aka the conservative base). You are idiots. Plain and simple (I should use "simple-minded" for that last link). I laugh at your horrible misfortune in getting your asses handed to you in the election. Roaring laughter. I don't mock your values, well, not most of them, I just mock you.

On second thought, should not these radicals be super excited right now as Obama is merely going to expedite the "end of days"? Don't they want that? Or is their real concern that they know deep down inside their hearts that their faith is a myth like everything else they grew up believing? I don't have much else to say. I am just laughing. I shouldn't laugh though. I should cry, no cringe at the utter ignorance on display within the Republican Party. Of course, I am not surprised. This has become the hallmark of conservative values. Ignorance has become a rallying cry. Remember, these people worship a white trash, backwoods, fundamentalist whose family would make a great Jerry Springer episode.

Afghanistan Legalizes Rape

Comments
h/t Think Progress

Religious fundamentalism strikes again! For Karzai to remain politically strong, he needs to rally the support of the conservative minority Shiite Islamic extremists to win election in August. So, how does he do that? Well, he will legalize rape for the Shiite's through a proposed Afghanistan law. How is this any different than what the Taliban (the Sunni Islamic extremists in Afghanistan) would do?
“As long as the husband is not traveling, he has the right to have sexual intercourse with his wife every fourth night,” Article 132 of the law says. “Unless the wife is ill or has any kind of illness that intercourse could aggravate, the wife is bound to give a positive response to the sexual desires of her husband.”

Who exactly are we fighting for and against in Afghanistan if our "ally" is as concerned about human rights as our enemy? Obama's response was a bit weak in my opinion. He objected to the law but qualified his response by saying our main objective is to fight Al Quaeda. Hey, sell the war however you want, but remember that protecting human rights is also our responsibility to the people of Afghanistan. If Karzai (whom the US empowered) is too politically weak to fight for human rights, then maybe we should find a different puppet. That should have been Obama's response.

Torture Does NOT Work

Comments
Like (most of) you, I am not surprised...

When CIA officials subjected their first high-value captive, Abu Zubaida, to waterboarding and other harsh interrogation methods, they were convinced that they had in their custody an al-Qaeda leader who knew details of operations yet to be unleashed, and they were facing increasing pressure from the White House to get those secrets out of him.

The methods succeeded in breaking him, and the stories he told of al-Qaeda terrorism plots sent CIA officers around the globe chasing leads.

In the end, though, not a single significant plot was foiled as a result of Abu Zubaida's tortured confessions, according to former senior government officials who closely followed the interrogations. Nearly all of the leads attained through the harsh measures quickly evaporated, while most of the useful information from Abu Zubaida -- chiefly names of al-Qaeda members and associates -- was obtained before waterboarding was introduced, they said.

Moreover, within weeks of his capture, U.S. officials had gained evidence that made clear they had misjudged Abu Zubaida. President George W. Bush had publicly described him as "al-Qaeda's chief of operations," and other top officials called him a "trusted associate" of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and a major figure in the planning of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. None of that was accurate, the new evidence showed.Abu Zubaida was not even an official member of al-Qaeda, according to a portrait of the man that emerges from court documents and interviews with current and former intelligence, law enforcement and military sources. Rather, he was a "fixer" for radical Muslim ideologues, and he ended up working directly with al-Qaeda only after Sept. 11 -- and that was because the United States stood ready to invade Afghanistan.

So, let's get this straight. We captured some bad guy. We then got good information out of him through real intelligence work and not torture. Then under pressure to get more information from the boss, they decided to torture him. Yes, waterboarding is torture and is unAmerican. These two points are not up for debate. He gave us false information while being tortured which forced Americans (intel officers and military) into a dangerous wild goose chase around the globe putting their lives at risk (how many died, will we ever know?). Not to mention he wasn't even an Al-Qaeda member or a planner of the 9/11 attacks, despite the public being fed a bunch of horse shit by our leaders about him being the "Al-Qaeda Chief of Operations". And we treat poor President Bush poorly "for no reason". Give me a god damn break.

Don't get me wrong. This douchebag is a dirty guy, but that doesn't change the fact that we are Americans and we do not torture. We are above that crap. This guy had information that he was willing to give up, which he did, without being tortured. We didn't care. We sold out our values and went after that information...

One connection Abu Zubaida had with al-Qaeda was a long relationship with Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the self-proclaimed mastermind behind the Sept. 11 attacks, officials said. Mohammed had approached Abu Zubaida in the 1990s about finding financiers to support a suicide mission, involving a small plane, targeting the World Trade Center. Abu Zubaida declined but told him to try bin Laden, according to a law enforcement source.

Abu Zubaida quickly told U.S. interrogators of Mohammed and of others he knew to be in al-Qaeda, and he revealed the plans of the low-level operatives who fled Afghanistan with him. Some were intent on returning to target American forces with bombs; others wanted to strike on American soil again, according to military documents and law enforcement sources.

Such intelligence was significant but not blockbuster material. Frustrated, the Bush administration ratcheted up the pressure -- for the first time approving the use of increasingly harsh interrogations, including waterboarding.

And now we are going to have a hard time prosecuting him. We are going to have a hard time calling out other countries who violate basic human rights (you know, those rights which our founders declared inalienable?). Here is a little bit intel from the torturing...

Abu Zubaida's revelations triggered a series of alerts and sent hundreds of CIA and FBI investigators scurrying in pursuit of phantoms. The interrogations led directly to the arrest of Jose Padilla, the man Abu Zubaida identified as heading an effort to explode a radiological "dirty bomb" in an American city. Padilla was held in a naval brig for 3 1/2 years on the allegation but was never charged in any such plot. Every other lead ultimately dissolved into smoke and shadow, according to high-ranking former U.S. officials with access to classified reports.

"We spent millions of dollars chasing false alarms," one former intelligence official said.

Despite the poor results, Bush White House officials and CIA leaders continued to insist that the harsh measures applied against Abu Zubaida and others produced useful intelligence that disrupted terrorist plots and saved American lives.

Two weeks ago, Bush's vice president, Richard B. Cheney, renewed that assertion in an interview with CNN, saying that "the enhanced interrogation program" stopped "a great many" terrorist attacks on the level of Sept. 11.

Ya, as if they are going to apologize for tainting the American name, sacrificing our values, or putting this country in harms way. Don't cry to me about how unfair people treat Bush or Cheney. They deserve it.

Jindal vs the Volcano

Comments
__________
Then
"Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington," Jindal said.

Now
WILLOW, Alaska (AP) - Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano erupted five times overnight, sending an ash plume more than 9 miles into the air in the volcano's first emissions in nearly 20 years.

Oops. He is right, we should leave wasteful government spending on things like volcano eruption detection to the private sector and charities. We should cut out all Hurricane monitoring as well. Perhaps the Churches would like to take that one of the government hands? Out of all the examples of honest wasteful spending that Kenneth could have used to make a point, this one turned out to blow up in his face :-p

Here is a good article on the topic.

Obama vs Jesus

_____

I don't know how I missed this, but Obama has topped Jesus in a Harris poll (courtesy Liberal Journal) that asked an unprompted response on whomever (whoever?) the respondent considered a "hero" and were given three selections. They obviously didn't call me as you can see that Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, and the uber-sexy Rush Limbaugh did not make the list of who people are willing to blindly and unquestionably follow like sheep...
